"Today’s Leadership Challenges to Democrats in Europe and Beyond” was one of the major issues under discussion during the 5th annual Symi Symposium held in Samos, July 6-14 2002. The symposium’s theme, “Managing Change and Conflict in a world in transition”, emerged as a key topic during sessions. Other issues discussed were: redefining social democracy for the 21st century; the problems of understanding citizen security; the connection between security and economic efficiency; how to ‘civilize’ globalization.
