Harnessing Globalization

In the forward-looking Symi spirit, this year's Symposium will tackle how globalization affects and shapes the “agenda” for the next twenty years. 
 
Globalization inspires awe, hope and enthusiasm but also fear and anger leading also to movements for “de-globalisation”. Unimaginable global networks have emerged allowing for new forms of social organization.” New models of governance and new priorities are required to regulate issues generated by interdependencies in the economic, environmental and technological sphere. Fast-moving societies put much stress on traditional values. Virtual economy and cryptocurrencies re-ignite the debate on cashless societies. Increasing inequality highlights the necessity of a new social contract. Globalized culture becomes an impressive tool for addressing isolationist and xenophobic reactions. Population movements profoundly change perceptions of identity. The fluctuating New World Order/Disorder affects profoundly existing and emerging conflicts. The value of democracy is ideologically contested by 21st century authoritarianism. Europe, faces the challenge to harness globalization, avoiding disintegration.
